If you haven’t made the short trip to visit Pocahontas County, West Virginia, you still have time to take advantage of some great attractions during the fall months.
Cass Scenic Railroad State Park offers rides to Bald Knob, the second highest point in West Virginia. At 4862’, the views are breathtaking, and with the coming of the cool fall air and autumn colors, it is a sight to behold. Of course, we do recommend you make reservations because the trains fill up very quickly.
And if you are looking for different views, try the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad. The Durbin Rocket gives the visitor a different perspective. The train travels the west fork of the Greenbrier River for a fantastic 1 ½ hour round trip. The ridges are steep and the stream is clear.
The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is open seven days a week. The hands-on interactive museum is worth the trip. Then take the tour to see the largest moving structure on land, the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope. The NRAO tours begin at 9 am and run every hour on the hour until 5 pm.
As the summer gives way to fall, you can still gear up on the Greenbrier River Trail or the West Fork Trail. These trails offer over 100 miles of pristine and relatively easy mountain biking and this time of the year offer exquisite views and scenery.
High atop Cheat Mountain is a destination unlike any you will find. It is Snowshoe Mountain. A magical place for people of all ages, this incredible resort offers adventures and activities that will take you to new heights.
Nearly a mile in the sky, you'll discover the refined Village at Snowshoe. This western-style ski village offers something for everyone. Find a special gift at a quaint shop or take in spectacular sunsets over dinner at one of Snowshoe’s fabulous restaurants.
In winter, Snowshoe Mountain takes on a whole new feel. Snow-laden spruce gives way to over 234 acres of the best skiing and snowboarding in the East. Over 180 inches of the beautiful white stuff falls on the mountaintop each winter, ensuring great conditions at all times.
Winter also brings a new menu of activities such as snowmobiling, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and horse drawn sleigh rides.
Whatever the season, you'll discover that Snowshoe Mountain Resort is truly an amazing place.
