Rich in Civil War and industrial/railroad history, Martinsburg is the hub and county seat of Berkeley County, West Virginia. Geographically, it is ideally situated as a pivot point for countless exciting adventures. Conveniently located off Interstate 81, the city has a passenger rail station and is serviced by Amtrak and MARC Train.

Berkeley County’s beginnings established itself with a rich railroad history before the Colonies declared their independence. The county seat of Martinsburg, which was once a part of Virginia, changed hands over 50 times during the Civil War. The North was determined to keep control of the valuable railroads that crisscross Berkeley County, and the South was determined to destroy them.

In 1861, Confederate troops used teams of horses to drag as many locomotives overland as they could 22 miles away to the town of Winchester, Virginia. These troops burned what they could not steal to insure the locomotives could never be used again.

Within a year, General Stonewall Jackson’s Confederate troops returned to Martinsburg to burn the town’s enormous roundhouse complex to the ground. The complex was rebuilt three years later.

For the rest of the war, both sides fought bitterly over the railroad lines. Confederate troops destroyed them, and Union troops repaired them nine times. The townspeople of Martinsburg learned to adapt to the changing winds for their very survival.

Reminiscent of earlier times, the tree-lined main thoroughfares of Martinsburg invite and beckon the visitor to enjoy a walk through its historic streets and among its friendly people. Relax in the square, grab a bite to eat or browse the unique shops. A West Virginia Mainstreet Community, Martinsburg is alive year-round with arts, music, festivals and special events.
