In the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, every season brings adventure and scenic beauty. In warm weather, camp in Great Smoky Mountains National Park where you'll wake up to morning mist before you set off on the park's vast network of hiking trails. Fish for brown and rainbow trout in the Little River, or head to the excellent fishery at Abrams Creek, only 20 minutes from the city of Townsend. And anglers can hike to many smaller streams to fish in quiet serenity.
The 500,000 acres of Great Smoky Mountains National Park make it the
largest wilderness area east of the Mississippi. The park features
over 800 miles of trails, packed with more wildlife, birds, and
flowering plants than you can count! Visitors will even want to keep
an eye out for black bears, which make their homes in the park.
There are no shortage of ways to explore the beauty of the Smoky
Mountains. Guides take tour groups by horseback along cool, wooded
trails, over mountain streams, and out to vistas of forest and
wildflowers. In the car, enjoy the panoramic mountain views as you drive down scenic
roads. You'll find country stores, old pioneer cabins, white churches,
and old cemeteries that welcome passers-by. Find the town of Cades
Cove in a peaceful valley between 5,500-foot mountain peaks. Living
history in Cades Cove includes a fully operational grist mill, complete
with a working waterwheel! In the summer, seasonal programs here
include apple butter-making and performances in the amphitheater.
The Smoky Mountains area also hosts many arts and craft fairs, live music, and other annual festivals.
