SIOUX FALLS, SD

Welcome to scenic Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Named for the gorgeous cascades along the Big Sioux River, formed thousands of years ago by Ice Age glaciers. The retreating ice also exposed the region's characteristic pinkish quartzite bedrock, which can be seen in many of the city's older buildings.

First time visitors may enjoy getting a panoramic view of the Falls Park neighborhood, and the rest of the city beyond it, from the observation tower at the visitor information center. Spots to explore in Falls Park include the remains of the Queen Bee Mill and the town's former Light and Power Company building, which is now home of the Falls Overlook Cafe, offering tasty food, historical exhibits and a sweeping view of the river.  The park also hosts a variety of local events and festivals throughout the year.

For a closer look at what Sioux Falls would have been like in the 1880s, drive out to Buffalo Ridge, a real cowboy ghost town just five miles outside the city. Today, Buffalo Ridge includes over 50 exhibits, some animated, offering a historical adventure for all ages.

Another great place to spend a day of family fun is the Great Plains Zoo and Delbridge Museum. The 45-acre Zoo is home to over 850 animals from all over the world, including a new African savannah habitat, and the Delbridge Museum features one of the largest and most varied collections of mounted animals.

Sioux Falls itself underwent a transformation in the 1980s as the city's economy transitioned from industry to health care, finance, and retail. Since then, Sioux Falls has been named "one of the best places to live in America" (Money Magazine, 1992), and has seen an explosion of art, theater, and other cultural events. Today, visitors won't want to miss out on the current shows at the city's various performing arts venues and other galleries.
