BEAUFORT, SC

Beaufort, South Carolina’s historic district is recognized as a distinctive destination by the National Trust for Historic Presentation.  The town of Beaufort, and surrounding areas of Port Royal, and the Sea Islands comprise a water filled wonderland of salt creeks and maritime forests with several hundred islands scattered about.  The intracoastal waterway wraps the town as it flows with the timeless tide.  Few things are better than sitting in the swings in the waterfront park, surrounded by historic homes, watching the procession of dolphins, shorebirds and boats go about their watery business.

Pat Conroy, well known writer, is a Beaufort native son who periodically mines his experiences here for the themes and characters in his books and movies. A visitor can see many of the sights that Pat, who still lives here, sees daily.

Beaufort was officially founded in 1711, but began many years before that in the late 1500’s.  Since then, the times have changed, but the pace of life here still understands the value of  taking time to savor the sights and fell of the old South.  Beaufort values friendship, and new friendships more than most places.  Whether from here or not, the people still wave, say hello, even to a stranger.

Don’t mistake Beaufort’s laid back style for lack of things to do.  We love a party or a festival as much as anyone, and have them almost year around.  We also love art.  A stroll in Beaufort is rewarded with a dozen or more galleries in all price ranges, and more galleries are located on St. Helena Island.  Do you like fresh shrimp, oysters and crab?  Pull up a chair and grab a fork.  You are in the right place!

Beaufort is located between Charleston, SC to the north and Savannah, Ga. to the south. It is located 25 miles north of Hilton Head Island.   Make your trip a Southern trilogy, but leave plenty of time for Beaufort.  US 17 connects all three.  I -95 is a short hop away.
