The Valley Forge area and Montgomery County offer a wide variety of wonderful diversions for vacations, day trips and weekend getaways. Located in the countryside within a half-hours drive from Philadelphia, its easily accessible from major highways and Philadelphia International Airport.
History
Start your explorations on the beautiful rolling hillsides of 3,600-acre Valley Forge National Historical Park. It was here that George Washington and his men weathered the winter encampment of 1777-78. Tour Washington's Headquarters, soldiers' huts and Artillery Park. Pack a picnic lunch, or enjoy the miles of multi-use trails. Want more history? There are historic gems and landmarks all throughout the surrounding countryside.
Recreation
The countryside is gorgeous, and there are countless ways to enjoy the great outdoors, from nature trails and water slides to golfing, canoeing and hot air ballooning.
Gardens, Arboreta, Nature Centers
The nation's largest concentration of public gardens and arboreta is right here. You'll find manicured formal gardens, acres of azaleas, some of the nations oldest and rarest trees, medicinal herb gardens, an historic botanical garden, historic rose gardens and Japanese gardens. World-renowned Longwood Gardens boasts newly renovated conservatories and a spectacular exhibit for every season. Morris Arboretum is Pennsylvania's official arboretum, and includes sculpture and flower gardens as well as a Victorian fernery. At Mill Grove, John James Audubon's first home in America, you can explore the woodlands and river banks that inspired one of the worlds most renowned wildlife artists.
Art and Culture
Art, history, culture, fabulous museums and attractions are all within easy driving distance of Valley Forge National Historical Park. The Barnes Foundation, one of the world's premier private collections, includes 2,500 works of art, including paintings by Cezanne, Picasso and Renoir, and African sculpture. Wharton Esherick Studio offers an intimate glimpse the dean of American wood sculpture. Plus many other art galleries and museum collections, ranging from helicopters and antique dolls to antique cars and ethnic heritage.
Shopping
And don't forget the shopping! There's no sales tax on clothing in Pennsylvania - and if variety is the spice of life, you'll find it here. The Plaza and the Court at King of Prussia is the nation's largest retail shopping mall, with eight major department stores and 400 shops and restaurants. Shoppings great at the newly renovated Plymouth Meeting Mall, with its carousel court - at Willow Grove Park - or at quaint country villages like Skippack and Peddlers Village, where you'll find one-of-a-kind treasures.
Entertainment
When the sun goes down, there's a wealth of choices for evening entertainment; Las Vegas-style revues, musical comedies, Shakespearean classics and headline acts are all right here. And special events range from air shows to craft shows, colonial reenactments to steeplechase races.
