STATE OF NORTH DAKOTA, ND

Legendary North Dakota

Adventure, history, culture, entertainment, scenery, fun; experience it all in legendary North Dakota. This is your invitation to explore the state deemed the friendliest and most affordable.

Outdoor Adventure
Outdoor adventure is the #1 visitor experience in North Dakota. The 96-mile Maah Daah Hey Trail through the North Dakota Badlands is a destination track for mountain biking, hiking and horseback riding. Lake Sakakawea on the Missouri River and Devils Lake cover more than 390,000 acres of fantastic fishing. Waterways throughout the state offer opportunity for canoeing and kayaking.

Birding and wildlife viewing is synonymous with North Dakota. Here you’ll find more wildlife refuges than any other state. At Theodore Roosevelt National Park, Sullys Hill National Game Preserve and the National Buffalo Museum, visitors can truly experience buffalo roaming the prairie.

North Dakota also has more golf courses per capita than any other state. Some of the most recognized include Bully Pulpit, Hawktree, the Links of North Dakota and Kings Walk.

Ten scenic byways and back ways show visitors the diverse North Dakota typography: From buttes, Badlands and gorges to hills, prairies and forests. Fall in North Dakota is especially known as hunting haven — with hundreds of thousands of acres of available public land.

When the snow falls there are new opportunities to get outdoors: Four ski areas offer downhill skiing; countless miles of cross-country trails can be found in cities; plus there are plenty of recreational areas and state parks. There are also 3,900 miles of snowmobile trails.

History and Heritage
Enjoy North Dakota’s place in America’s history and heritage at one of the many state and national historic sites. Discover Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park, General George Custer’s last home before he and the Seventh Calvary rode to their fateful end at Little Bighorn. Visit one of the last remaining bonanza farms in the U.S., the Bagg Bonanza Farm, located in North Dakota’s lush Red River Valley. Or dig into prehistoric history at a scientific, professionally conducted fossil excavation; where you can work to unearth 60-million-year-old fossils of crocodiles and champsosaurs (crocodile-like animals).

Newly opened is the Ronald Reagan Minuteman Missile State Historic Site, near Cooperstown. Visitors can take the underground journey into what was once Mission Control at a nuclear-launch facility code-named Oscar Zero.

Culture
North Dakota’s culture celebrates everything from the first people to immigrant heritage, Western lifestyles to frontier survival. Here visitors find festivals, powwows, fairs, rodeos, reenactments and so much more! Two of the best places for delving into North Dakota’s culture are Norsk Høstfest (North America’s largest Scandinavian festival) and the United Tribes International Powwow.

A new attraction opening in 2010 is the Earthlodge Villages at New Town. Explore earthlodges and tepees along the scenic shores of Lake Sakakawea.

Another must-see attraction is the International Peace Garden near Dunseith — the only garden to span two nations and honor peace between the United States and Canada.
