MACKINAW, MI

Visit Mackinaw! Michigan's Favorite Vacation Destination. Experience three National Historic Sites: Colonial Michilimackinac, Historic Mill Creek, & Fort Mackinac. Great shopping, unique attractions, live nightly entertainment, Mackinac Island, vacation packages, and over 60 hotels and resorts.

In 1715 the European fur traders and settlers established a small village called Michilimackinac at the shores of the Straits of Mackinac because of its strategic location at the crossroads of the Great Lakes. Eventually this small village became the home of the French and British military operations that spread into the Upper Great Lakes wilderness and governed over the important fur trade industry. Although it appears as though time has remained still for nearly 200 years inside the palisades of Michilimackinac, one of Michigan's favorite vacation destinations has sprung up around the Historic Landmark and offers endless attractions, activities, shopping and entertainment to vacationers from around the globe.

Mackinaw City, Michigan is an amazing mackinaw where history and hospitality meet at the crossroads of the Great Lakes. Aside from visiting the National Historic Landmarks of Colonial Michilimackinac, Historic Mill Creek, and Fort Mackinac, visitors will be awed at the new turn of the century streetscapes, parks, sidewalks, storefronts, golf courses, lakeside resorts, hotels, and bed & breakfasts in Mackinaw City. The most exciting new attraction in Mackinaw City is a new Disney-esque entertainment, shopping, and restaurant complex called Mackinaw Crossings and the 850-seat live performance venue The Center Stage Theatre. Mackinaw Crossings, which opened in 1998, features fifty shops, six restaurants, a live butterfly garden, a movie house, a teddy bear factory to make your own teddy bear, and every evening guests gather at the performance court to watch the free nightly laser light show and a variety of street performers who juggle, sing, and perform magic.

Hop on one of the three ferry boat lines in Mackinaw City for transportation to world famous Mackinac Island, known as Michigan's crown jewel. On Mackinac Island you will experience what life was like without automobiles, as they are banned from the 81/2-mile-long Island. Your transportation to see the many island attractions will be horse-drawn carriages and bicycles. Make sure you see Fort Mackinac. This Fort was originally constructed by the British in 1771 and served as a military outpost high above the island set on a 150-foot-high limestone bluff. Mackinaw City boasts several year-'round special events and activities.
