HENDERSON COUNTY, KY

HENDERSON, KENTUCKY

Whether you’re interested in the great outdoors, the arts or shopping, there’s so much to do you’ll need more than a day to explore the area. Escape to Henderson and discover what makes us different!

If you’re looking for great musical performances, look no further!

In June, join us for the 20th W.C. Handy Blues and Barbecue Festival. Celebrate the life and music of former resident W.C. Handy at a free music festival that showcases some of the nation’s best blues artists. Live music at the scenic Audubon Mill Park on the Ohio Riverfront continues every night from Wednesday evening to Saturday night.

The 25th Bluegrass in the Park Folklife Festival, held in August, is one of the largest free bluegrass festivals in the country. This two-day event features great music and mouthwatering food. A concurrent bike tour and street pole vault draws spectators from all over!

Nature lovers will enjoy the renowned John James Audubon State Park and Museum. At the park, enjoy spectacular birding opportunities, boating, fishing and hiking. The world-class museum houses one of the largest collections of naturalist and celebrated artist, John James Audubon’s artworks. The year 2010 marks the bicentennial of his arrival in Henderson, and a full slate of community events are planned throughout the year.

Another beautiful habitation is The Sloughs Wildlife Area. With nearly 10,000 acres of wetlands, woodlands, ridges and open fields, you won’t want to miss this paradise for hunters, fisherman, campers, hikers and nature lovers.

For those with little ones, the Riverfront Park Fountains is an immensely popular water park play area located in Audubon Mill Park, near downtown. The fountains overlook the Ohio River with plenty of seating near and below the fountain area where you can enjoy the view of the park while the kids play.

While you’re downtown, spend a day shopping and exploring the area. Whether you’re an antique collector, musician or just looking for the perfect pair of shoes, there’s a shop in Henderson for you! Our downtown also features 13 beautiful bronze “Audubon” bird sculptures by Kentucky native Raymond Graf and a historic walking tour of the city.

You’ll want to visit Henderson’s only winery, Ruby Moon Vineyard and Winery. Take a tour of the vineyard and sample Kentucky gourmet cheeses. Each year the winery hosts a scavenger hunt, art festival and a series of wine making classes.

And who could visit Kentucky without taking in one of its most popular attractions? Thoroughbred horse racing! Ellis Park Race Course’s 8,500 grandstands are open from early July through Labor Day. Experience the fun summertime tradition of choosing a horse and the thrill of watching the race unfold.

So start your planning today by contacting us at The Depot Visitor’s Center. Our knowledgeable staff can provide local maps and the latest information about special events and places to stay.
