BRUNSWICK AND THE GOLDEN ISLES, GA

Brunswick and The Golden Isles- St. Simons Island, Sea Island, Little St. Simons Island, Jekyll Island.

Come and discover, as did the Spanish some 400 years ago, not gold, but rather the astonishing beauty, glorious weather, and natural radiance that make these very special places so indisputably golden.

Home of the original Brunswick Stew, mainland Brunswick is named for Braunschweig, Germany, the ancestral home of King George II, grantor of Georgia’s original land charter. Local shrimp boats and large ocean-going freighters from around the world can be seen along Brunswick’s waterfront. Old Town charms visitors with its streets of fine Victorian architecture that includes several historic bed & breakfast establishments. See centuries-old Lover’s Oak, visit scores of shops and antique stores, and stand beneath Lanier’s Oak, where the breathtaking view across the vast tidal marshlands moved poet Sidney Lanier to pen his famed Marshes of Glynn.

The largest of The Golden Isles, St. Simons Island continues to reveal the remarkable beauty and fascinating history of what 16th-century Spanish explorers called San Simeon. In 1736, General James Oglethorpe established Georgia’s first military outpost at Fort Frederica, now a national monument. Today, visitors come year ’round to swim, stroll and sail along its miles of lovely beaches, to challenge its 99 holes of superb golf and numerous tennis courts, and to explore its countless shops and restaurants. The Village, at the Island’s southern tip, includes a 200-year old working lighthouse, coastal history museum, and fishing pier. Neptune Park, is a favorite seaside gathering place. The hauntingly beautiful Christ Church, next to Fort Frederica, is not to be missed. Through tunnels of ancient oaks, bike or drive the length of St. Simons Island, finding treasures at every turn and history in every gentle ocean breeze.

Reached by causeway from St. Simons Island, Sea Island is an internationally acclaimed resort.

Though much of Sea Island is residential, Island life centers around The Cloister, perennially honored as one of the world’s great hotels. Golf club, beach club, gun club, horseback riding, fine dining and numerous other activities are among the amenities enjoyed by its guests.

Accessible only by boat, Little St. Simons Island is the northernmost of The Golden Isles and certainly the most secluded. For many years a privately owned retreat, the Island offers a limited number of guests the rare opportunity to experience the enchantment and solitude of the isolated beaches and marshlands that

bound its10,000 acres of pristine woodlands.

The southernmost of The Golden Isles, Jekyll Island was purchased in 1886 by a group of wealthy families as a private retreat. By 1900, The Jekyll Island Club membership included Rockefellers, Morgans, Cranes and Goulds and represented over one-sixth of the world’s wealth. Today, this era of Jekyll Island’s history can be revisited with a tram tour of the National Historic Landmark District, including many of the opulent mansions their millionaire owners called “cottages.” Jekyll Island offers an abundance of recreational activities that are sure to please visitors of all ages.
