RICHMOND, BC

The city of Richmond rests on the west coast of Canada in metro Vancouver, 20 minutes from downtown Vancouver. Richmond has transformed from a rural community to a city of international acclaim. The city’s fast transformation has yet to slow down too, as the construction of a Rapid Transit and the Olympic Speed Skating Oval being built for the 2010 Winter Games progresses, so will the evolution of the city.

To this day, no one is truly sure how the city of Richmond got its name, however there are theories. The first is that the city was named after a county in Ontario from which the first settlers came. The second is that it was named after “Richmond View” which was a ranch in Australia where the first settlers lived prior. Another is that it was named for an area in Australia that was nearby the aforementioned ranch. And the last theory is that it was named for an area in England, a town or county. Since the members of the first municipal government unfortunately didn’t leave any written confirmation on the origin of the city’s name, the source is still a mystery. There has been efficient information found that revealed there is a connection between Richmond and some counties and towns with the same name in Australia, England and Ontario.

Take a leisurely stroll through the city’s shops, experience the history of the west coast fishing industry and explore the historic sites in the area. Visit the award winning Murakami House and the insightful Britannia Heritage Shipyard Park. Step back in time at the Steveston Museum and the Historic Tram #1220. But first, a walk through of Garry Point Park is recommended for a scenic view of the wharf and a fish and chips lunch.

If you’re in town for Canada Day be sure to attend the most popular annual event in BC, the Steveston Salmon Festival.

But that’s not all there is to see! Other must-see locations include the London Farm, Finn Slough, the Buddhist Temple and as many fruit and veggie stands along Steveston Highway you can stand.

To really discover and learn about the art and culture of Richmond a trip to Richmond’s Library Cultural Center which hosts an art gallery that features contemporary art by local artists. In its nine art studios the museum customarily depicts Richmond’s roots. Another piece of culture can be found at the Richmond Gateway Theater that plays host to theatrical shows, concerts and special features.
