Grande Prairie started out as a trading post in 1881. It was settled by European fur traders beginning in 1770. The city’s name came from Father Grouard, a Roman Catholic missionary, who described the land as “la grande prairie” and so led the city to assume the name. Because of its rich heritage and colorful history Grande Prairie has grown into an equally exceptional city with plenty to do, see, explore and learn about. Check out the Crystal Centre which is located in center of the city and features the Canada Games Arena and Bowes Family Crystal Gardens. The city is also host to several trade shows, concerts, hockey games and other events. The Coca Cola Centre is also a must-see; it features two ice surfaces.
