Just north of Calgary, and the capital of Alberta, is “Canada’s Festival City,” Edmonton. With a generous area of 264 sq ft, it boasts a population only 9.4% of New York City’s; well-known for its vibrant music and art as well as its enticing scenic atmosphere via the North Saskatchewan River. In celebration of their fabulous landscape Rundle Park has an annual River Day with paddling and fishing clinics, canoe rides or Riverwatch Raft rides and several other activities. The River Valley itself is host to 22 major parks where you can revel in walking trails, cross-country, picnics, bike rides and so much more. Some of the parks include: Dawson Park, Capilano Park, Gold Bar Park and Kinsmen Park just to name a few.
Given the naturalist culture of the city it’s only natural for Edmonton to have created Natural Areas, which is an ongoing project that was executed in 1993 where 85 nature sites became priority for conservation. Although a small number have been lost, the majority remains privately owned and conserved. These natural areas include the Lois Hole Centennial Provincial Park and the Enoch Cree Nation Indian Reservation. Many of those conserved Natural Areas can be visited, and thus appreciated, at several parks that connect along the North Saskatchewan River.
Edmonton also houses the largest shopping/entertainment complex in North America called West Edmonton Mall. This super mall consists of 21 movie theaters, a 25-ride/attraction amusement park, casino, water park, man-made lake, skating rink and everything else you can possibly think of wanting in a mall – you name it, and they’ve just about got it! Another trendy shopping hub would be Whyte Avenue where the young population flocks to for a hang out and relaxation hot spot. Regardless of where you end up in this nature rich and fun-conscious city you’re guaranteed to have a brilliantly memorable time.
